With Sensei Taki Kodaira
- Three afternoon classes 16:00–17:30
Shodō is a visual art form born in China. Using brush and ink, the aesthetic qualities of the ideograms used in Chinese writing (called Kanji in Japan) are elevated to a state of beauty. Through close attention to overall composition and to the energy of each line (while reproducing the traditional form of the characters) the artist is able to express his or her own nature.
This is a unique opportunity to experience the 3,500 year evolution of Kanji through the brushing of the single character ‘永’ (Chinese yong / Japanese ei – eternal).
From the primitive style of the earliest form (oracle bone script) the course will progress to the study of the eight fundamental brush techniques of structurally complete Kaisho (regular script). The course culminates in the challenge to combine these eight strokes in one continuous flow to complete the character 永.
The fluid movement of the strokes coordinated from the centre aligns the flow within the inner body and brings stillness and meditation. This illumined space provides a perfect mirror for the Yoga practitioner’s sadhana.

Taki Kodaira Sensei was born in Nagano, Japan. She gained a Master of Fine Arts from the China Academy of Art, taught extensively in Italy and the UK and now lives in Kyōto. Over the last five years she has perfected the art of teaching Shodō online and has students all over the world.
